AM - on the treadmill in the hotel in Orlando - 11 miles at MP effort.  Decent effort.  Workout #1 for today.

PM - Workout #2 - 2 mile warm up then 10 x 2 min on/off; 8 x 1 min on/off - 2 mile cool down with Richie in St. Pete.  I drove over from Orlando after my meetings concluded and did this workout in the rain.  On the 2 min reps we averaged well under 6:40 pace (a couple being under 6:20); but I slowed a bit on the 1 min reps for and average closer to 7:10.  Completely depleted all glycogen in my muscles and completely shrived from the rain and humidity.

Hey Bret - I'm interested in your approach, if you don't mind me prying.

If you're doing MP effort, does that mean you have a target heart rate for marathon distance, and MP effort means running the pace corresponding to keeping your HR in the right zone? Or is it more a matter of perceived effort, or something else?

Sure Drew. Actually quite perceptive of you to pick up on that. When on a "foreign" treadmill - if I don't know if the calibration is correct and suspect it may be off - I use a combination of HR and perceived effort to determine MP effort. I use the combination because sometimes HR is inaccurate. So if I am struggling to hit a pace on the treadmill - I work off of effort and HR and ignore the pace on the display - likewise if I am "flying" on the treadmill pace - I apply the same approach and work off of perceived effort and HR. I generally know what my HR needs to be for MP.

Thanks for the insight, Bret. Sometime I need to really hit you up for info on heart rate zones related to race & training paces.
