AM - 5 miles on the treadmill.  It was cold this morning - but not as cold as was predicted.  I think it may have been 29 degrees versus the 14 degrees that was in the forecast.   We did however get some snow flurries yesterday evening - which was nice - no accumulation though.  Anyway, I had it in my head that it was going to be uncomfortably cold when I awoke, so treadmill was in my plan and that's what I did, much to my dog's disappointment.

AM 5.5 miles with Dan and our dogs - colder this morning than yesterday 26 degrees - but it really was one of those days where you really did not notice the cold - and I had the right clothes on.   Made for a good run.

AM - 5.5 miles with Dan and the dogs - we ventured away from the neighborhood a bit, but our route took us on some roads that were busier with traffic than we expected for a Friday morning - made for a little bit of a stressful run.

AM - 4.5 miles with Dan and the dogs - my left knee is giving me intermittent pain/discomfort - started a couple days after the virtual 10k I ran over a week ago - and then was fine for several days but lingers a bit and comes back.  More pronounced going downstairs.   It was fine on Saturday and then after running on the treadmill yesterday was sore this morning.  Took it easy today and foam rolled and stretched well.   I think it is patellofemoral syndrome or an issue with the VMO.   It is on the upper part of the knee on the inside where one of the quadracep muscles connects - vastus medialis oblique (VMO).   Anyway...keeping an eye on it.

AM - 5.5 miles with Dan and the dogs - took a different route - tripped and fell on some roots but since it was cold and I had on gloves and tights, the tumble on the trail was of little consequence.

AM - a run with the guys and our dogs - I broke off to head home halfway through as Riley had dropped me off where we met up - so I got a little more distance than I usually get with them on Saturdays.

AM - went a little longer (7) this morning with Dan and our dogs - fair bit of it in the rain on the golf course - quite slippery in spots - temps in the 30's.   Got a new hands-free "leash system" for Finn - attaches at my waist and uses an elastic/bungee type of leash.  May take a little getting used to it, but I think I like it.  Certainly nice to free up both hands when running with him.

AM - the 3 amigos and their dogs on the trails around the horse farms at sunrise.   Temps in the upper 30's with some fog/mist rising in the pastures and ponds and for a moment the conversation stopped and it was just the sound our footfalls on the dirt/gravel road and the panting of the dogs and we were all "present".  Mental snapshot filed and tucked away in my head for years to come.

AM - Currahee!   Riley and I took a drive to north Georgia this morning to Currahee Mountain which was made somewhat famous by the HBO mini series Band of Brothers based on the book by Stephen Ambrose about E Company 506th Regiment 101 Airborne U.S Army - who trained at Camp Toccoa.   The line from the show says "3 miles up and 3 miles down" but as it turns out it is actually 2.7 miles up and down.   About 1000 feet in rise.   Cold morning just 18 degrees when we started.   Not especially steep or difficult if you are not trying to run quickly - Riley struggled a bit and we walked some of the steeper parts near the top.   Took some photos and had some good father - daughter conversation.

PM - 13.1 miles for a long run.  Finn had a gimpy leg and so he was sidelined - and all of my training friends had already done their workouts   - so this was a solo effort.  Much warmer in the low 50's.  Enjoyed it.

AM - 10k with Dan and the dogs.  Quite foggy.   Needed to get in at least 7k today to meet my December Strava Challenge of 300k.

Quick year in review of 2020 for my running blog:

The year was difficult and challenging for the whole world with COVID-19 pandemic.   My job as many shifted from an in-office and frequent travelling gig, to one in which I worked from home and attended video conferences.   We were fortunate and blessed with our situation, but many were not.

In a way though it gave us time to reconnect more meaningfully as a family.  Two of my daughters spent extended periods with us in the late spring and early summer from their homes in the Northeast - one having been furloughed from her job and the other working remotely on her law degree.   My eldest daughter and her husband had their first child and because they live about 10 mins from us, we have been really pleased to spend a great deal of time enjoying our first granddaugther.

Running-wise of course there were many race plans changed and cancelled that were on my calendar - but I made the most of it accepting different kinds of challenges and creating a few of my own:

  • The Boston Marathon was postponed and then canceled and shifted to a virtual event - so I did on a treadmill and ran a decent time of 3:15.
  • For Global Running Day - I ran 1 mile ever hour for 24 hours
  • The Peachtree Road Race was postponed and then canceled and shifted to a virtual event - and I ran on my own course a decent time of 41:27
  • I covered just over 2300 miles of running this year - which is an increase of about 200 miles over last year
  • I took only 3 days off from running the entire year.
  • Since March 1 - I have not taken a single day-off from running and I have now run over 300 days at least 3 miles per day - but averaging well over 5 miles per day.  My personal goal is to run for a full year without a day off.

I have run most days in the morning - chasing the sunrise with my dog Finn and for much of the year with my neigbbor Dan and another friend Greg.   We have grown to be closer friends as a result.

I have not been injured or sick the entire year and no one in my immediate family has been ill with the virus or otherwise.  Although we have experienced loss in our extended families and know of many close to us who have not been as fortunate - we continue to pray and be hopeful for things to improve in the coming months and years.
