So as a replacement race for NYC last weekend, I decided late Tuesday this week to do the Anthem Richmond (Virginia) Marathon.  It was close in time to the race I had peaked for, and got reasonably good reviews on Marathon Guide.

A bit gutted after this race.  No excuses - just did not get it done under 3 hours after a solid effort.   Trained very well - at least from an aerobic build-up stand-point - and I executed reasonably well in the race.  First half was 1:28, but I think the rolling hills which pushed my HR a bit in the to red zone a few times eventually caught up to me between miles 20-21 and a slow fade saw my hopes for a sub 3 hour marathon fade with it.  No question in my mind that I gave everything I had - as I was completely knackered afterwards and my HR data from my Garmin can confirm it.

They had a pacer group for 3 hours with whom I ran for the first 8 miles and then I decided to pull away.  The sole pacer was all over the place with his pacing - (sometimes too fast and other times too slow).  After pulling away from them,  I kept expecting the 3 hour group to pass me at the end, but they never did. They must have faded worse than me. :)  With my string of 3-3:05's I should really consider pacing at a race some time  - LOL.

This was a very pretty race course for the most part - and had a series of rollers from miles 4 through about 17 which do not seem too significant viewed alone, but at least for me, I think the cumulative aspect of them is what may have been my downfall.  The event was reasonably well organized and the weather was absolutely spectacular.

On the positive side - this is my 3rd fastest marathon and my best in nearly 2 years.  So the training is working.  Just don't know if at age 46 if it is a race against father time that I am really losing.

NO, NO, NO!!!

If you can run 3:03 you can run 2:59. You just have to get the circumstances right. If you bounce back quick from this you should find another one in 12 weeks or so.

For what it's worth, you did a bunch of things right this time but one thing wrong in my opinion. We can hash this out sometime if you want.

Nice effort Bret. Sorry to hear you didn't break your goal of going under 3:00 but it sounds like you ran your best and left it all on the course. You'll get that sub-3, just keep at it.

Oh yeah... pretty good race despite the distractions the past couple weeks. Way to battle through.

Well done for giving it a go. Maybe the hills, the NYC debacle, and running a half so close to today's race, hindered your chances of breaking 3:00.

I'm sure you'll do it next time - so long as the race goes ahead. Stick at it, you're still a youngster with loads of running left to do:)

You're gonna get under 3 Bret. No doubt in my mind. Running 3:03 after a crazy couple weeks is really, really good. Congrats.

Very nice effort Bret. Heres a link for your consideration http://www.tallahasseemarathon.com/

Feb 3, 2013 - flat fast and boring so you dont get distracted by people and spectators :)

I'm doing the half, so you can set a goal of 2:55 and finish just ten minutes after me - lol

We have a guest room with your name on it - or bring the wife and you can have the Futon Suite with fireplace and half bath!

Much of what I had to say would only echo the above, but in particular I like Mr. Murphy's opening comment. As I like to keep reminding myself, "the marathon is a long race." I look forward to where you go from here.

Thanks everyone for your encouraging comments. I have had a few hours to reflect upon the race and while I was disappointed with the final time - I was satisfied and enjoyed much of the race. In looking at my splits, I was still within reach my goal all the way through 21-22 miles. Nearly there.

Time to regroup a bit; - run some local shorter local events in the hopefully more pleasant weather conditions here and build from there.

Very good race. Now that I have run it twice, I think the way to do this course is to run whatever feels comfortable in the first 7 miles, then consciously do not to push at all on any uphill. They don't last long (except for one or two) and they take a lot out of you over the distance -- the extra 10 seconds you get by pushing an uphill just aren't worth it. Then turn it back on at mile 20 or so where the rollers end. I did that by accident the first time and had a good race. Didn't do it this time and paid dearly.

Well done, Bret. Those minutes are hard won. You'll squeak them out at the next one.
